More than three billion people’s diets are sorely lacking in nutritional value according to a recent report from the health and wellness sector. Countless others are suffering from various vitamin and mineral deficiencies. These issues are leading to malnutrition, obesity, and a wide range of serious medical problems. In many cases, this lack of proper nutrition is the result of growing reliance on fast foods and prepackaged snacks, low-quality diets, and misunderstandings about nutritional needs.
Taking a Closer Look at Nutritional Requirements
Science has proven the body needs numerous nutrients to function properly and remain in good health. Those nutrients been divided among six categories by the World Health Organization. Four of those are classified as micronutrients while the other two are macronutrients. Water, protein, carbs, and fats fall into the latter category while vitamins and minerals fall into the former. People require larger amounts of macronutrients and small quantities of micronutrients.
Based on current medical profiles, the majority of the population consumes ample amounts of carbohydrates, fats, and water. Still, people often fall short on proteins, vitamins, and minerals. An estimated 50 percent of consumers have added vitamin and mineral supplements to their daily routines in an effort to bridge the gap, but many of those simply don’t provide all the micronutrients needed. In cases where severe deficiencies and certain medical conditions are present, absorption of those vitamins and minerals is the real issue.
Nutrition through Diet
Despite the essential nature of these nutrients, the human body can’t produce them on its own. Instead, it gleans them from outside sources. Ideally, those would be healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fish, nuts and seeds, and foods rich in polyunsaturated fats. Many people just don’t consume enough of those beneficial foods to get the nutrients they need, though. While not all over-the-counter multivitamins are able to help make up the difference, professional-grade supplements might be an effective alternative.
